These wagons entered traffic between 1986/87, Australian National (AN) modified twenty AOQY ore wagons by removing their bodywork and constructing a new structure to transport coiled steel sheet.
These wagons operated on both broad and standard gauge.
In the early 1990s they formed part of the National Rail Corporation (NRC) pool and were re-coded RCEX.
